Updated September 2021
The City of Woodstock is updating its policies and zoning by-law provisions to allow Additional Residential Units (ARUs) in limited areas of the City.
ARUs are smaller, secondary living quarters that are inside, attached to, or on the same property as a primary single or semi-detached dwelling. ARUs can take many forms, such as basement apartments, coach homes, in-law suites, garage lofts, etc.
The More Homes, More Choices Act that came into effect in Ontario in September 2019 directs municipalities to enact policies and zoning provisions that authorize ARUs units in low density housing types, such as single-detached and semi-detached homes. This is one way communities can begin to address the shortage of affordable housing options.
