Oxford County, on behalf of municipal partners, will release the tender for intersection improvements at Punkeydoodles Corners the week of May 6, 2024, with the selection of a preferred contractor expected before County Council in June.

Construction work at the intersection is planned to begin in July 2024 and will last three to four months.

Intersection improvements at Punkeydoodles Corners

The Intersection Control Feasibility Study was undertaken by Oxford County, Perth County, Wilmot Township and Region of Waterloo. Recommendations included:

  • Close the intersections at Oxford Road 24 (Perth Oxford Road) and Perth Road 101, and Huron Road and Perth Road 101.
  • Realign the intersection at Perth Road 101 and Perth Road 101A and add new turning lanes and upgraded illumination in this area.
  • Change the Punkeydoodles Avenue and Oxford Road 5 intersection to a three-way (tee) intersection, with stop control on Punkeydoodles Avenue.

Oxford County carried out some intersection improvements over the fall of 2023, including:

  • removing trees to improve sightlines;
  • installing electronic speed feedback signs; and,
  • installing additional reflectors along the east side of the curve.

On approval from all municipal councils, road work to carry out the proposed intersection improvements was scheduled for summer 2024, with the estimated $1 million in costs to be funded equally among the municipalities.

Oxford County has committed to monitoring how these changes impact traffic behaviour and road safety. This information will be used to consider other potential future improvements to the intersection in partnership with Perth County, Wilmot Township and Region of Waterloo.

About the Intersection Control Feasibility Study

Oxford County, working with Perth County, Township of Wilmot and the Region of Waterloo, has undertaken an Intersection Control Feasibility Study for Punkeydoodles Corners.

The study examined:

  • short, mid and long-term geometric and traffic control improvements at the intersection;
  • traffic operations or safety metrics, such as traffic volumes, levels of service, delay, queuing, collisions, speeds, sight lines, and illumination; and,
  • land acquisition needs to accommodate the recommended long-term improvements

Oxford County Council reviewed and approved recommended changes to the Punkeydoodles Corners intersection at the November 22, 2023, council meeting. The recommendations were before Perth County Council on December 7 and Township of Wilmot Council on December 11, 2023.

Community consultation

Consultation with residents, the general public, stakeholders, and agency partners has been a key component of the study. An in-person Public Information Centre took place on October 5, 2023, to gather public input, present findings to date, and share recommendations for the intersection. It was attended by more than 150 residents and included senior municipal representatives.
