What is a Road Safety Framework?
A road safety framework is the first step towards developing a comprehensive and consistent road safety strategy for Oxford County and area municipalities.
It will serve as the foundational document that lays the groundwork to support the future development of a detailed road safety strategy. The framework will include mission, vision and goals, as well as the actions and commitment, to support the development of a strategy for increasing road user safety and reducing, or eliminating, fatalities in our communities.
What is a Road Safety Strategy?
A road safety strategy is a collaborative and targeted approach to addressing collision trends.
Oxford's road safety strategy will provide a consistent, evidence-based plan to address road safety within the County. This work involves the collaboration of professionals from a variety of backgrounds, including engineering, education, enforcement, engagement and evaluation (the "5Es").
The strategy will include many different measures to address the worst types of collision trends, those that result in serious injuries and fatalities.
Importantly, road safety strategies are iterative, meaning plans will be revisited and adjusted on an ongoing basis, learning from the successes and mistakes of previous strategies.
A targeted approach means that efforts will be focused on collision trends that have the best chance of success. This approach does not ignore other trends, but recognizes that focusing resources in a way that delivers the best results is a cornerstone of a strategic plan.
Why does Oxford County need a Road Safety Framework and a Strategy?
Traffic collisions are a major concern for the residents of Oxford County. In jurisdictions across Ontario, and globally, road safety strategies have been found to be an effective tool in reducing high severity crashes.
While driver behaviour will always be the foundation of a road safety strategy, there are many opportunities for Oxford County and area municipalities to support safer roadway environments that reduce the risk of collisions.
